Providing women-led, safe, affordable housing and building community for at-risk families and elders in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.
Incorporated in 1986, Mavis McMullen Place opened it's doors in 1988 with 34 suites providing housing for 55 residents. The society and building came to be through the efforts of a group of women living and working in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, many of whom were our first tenants. They saw a need for permanent, safe and affordable housing for women and children.
Haley Place, built in 1996, is our second building. The Building contains 39 suites, housing 79 residents, and is located in East Vancouver. Haley Place was imagined as a sort of second-stage housing and often acts as a next step for women who have lived at Mavis Place, surrounded by community resources, but are ready for a change of scene.
Programming
We are a very small organization so any additional funds we can raise make a huge difference. With only one staff person at each building our administration budget is very small and our maintenance budget is extremely tight. We rely on donations for special maintenance projects, growing our rooftop garden, kid's cooking classes, community dinners, and any other programming we can find a willing volunteer for.
Our Sustainable Future
A non-profit housing project, our operating budget is comprised of geared-to-income rental amounts and subsidized by BC Housing. This operating agreement has an expiry date and we are working hard on a sutainable financial plan to make sure we can continue to meet the same needs for our tenants for years to come or as long as the need exists. Fundraising is key to the sustainability of our organization.
Your contributions are so greatly appreciated.
Our Mission
“To provide stable affordable housing for low-income women of the greater downtown eastside of Vancouver, those with children, disabled women and older women – housing in which social justice, human rights and a culture of safety and wellbeing are actively promoted by adhering to the values of inclusivity and diversity, and respecting the autonomy of everyone involved, with the belief that housing is a right of all people.”
